Baltimore, Maryland January 20, 2009

With the space between my blogs widening of late, it seems at least the momentous days are covered. Today is one such day.   I just finished watching the inauguration of Barack O’Bama. As always with such things in America, the coverage was over the top -every angle covered by cameras, every comment or gesture commented upon by legions of network experts and pundits.  This is the most expensive inauguration in American history – $167 million.  One could question such an expense in such times.  But all of that aside, for a moment, it is a day of days in the United States, not for the pageantry of the moment, but for the spirit behind it. After eight years of partisan bickering and egocentric leadership, you cannot help but feel, however desperate the economic forecasts, that Americans are waking up to our place in the world, and the sacrifices that must be made to keep it.  You can’t look out over two million people of nearly every color and religion, packed side by side on a frigid winter day, and question the spirit that brought them here. And that spirit is what gives me hope that things will yet get better, not because of one man, but because of many.
