February 19, 2012 New Delhi, India

Just wrapping up 9 days or so with a group of Catholic priests here in India. Having been here since 1970, the Claretians have a lot of social programs around – most of them, in Catholic tradition, centered around education. I’ve been through southern India over the last week to look at some of their projects in Bangalore, Kerala and Chennai. Aside from the very impressive schools I visited, I also spent time at some projects the Claretians run taking care of mentally ill patients brought in off the street. India has very poor capacity to handle the mentally ill, and it’s a field of care that involves a lot of responsibility, legal and otherwise, on the part of the caregiver, so not a lot of NGO’s seem to handle it either.

I start tomorrow with the CDC – Centers for Disease Control – here in New Delhi, to look over some road accident prevention training they are supporting. If there is a country in the world that needs it, it’s India. Truly one of the scariest places I have ever been as far as roadways are concerned. In fact, we got in an accident the other day. The last time I was here, the taxi driver had two accidents before he got me to the hotel – actual, dented metal accidents. So, it should be interesting.
